Every year since 1945, the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have celebrated children and their favourite books with the annual event, Book Week!
Throughout Book Week, schools and libraries use their time acknowledging and respecting the importance of children's book authors, publishers, booksellers, illustrators, and other organisations, as well as celebrating the wonders and depths of children's literature and the creative never ending illustrations that bring to light many of our classic and most loved stories and characters. Many organisations choose to celebrate with colourful displays, activities and marathons in relation to the annual CBCA Book Week theme and of course the famous and most popular celebration activity of the dress up day.
In the early years the CBCA Branches created their own illustrations to promote and advertise the current years theme. From 1987, the CBCA began a new tradition of having the previous years winner of 'Book of the Year' create and illustrate the poster and focus for this years celebration, that has seen a vast variety of artistry and talent.
This year, award-winning author, illustrator and film-maker Shaun Tan has brilliantly illustrated the 2021 CBCA poster for this years theme "OLD WORLDS, NEW WORLDS & OTHER WORLDS".
Shaun Tan wrote on his website the meaning behind this year's theme.
Mr Tan writes, "The resulting oil painting references my own experiences of fatherhood and also to some extent the feeling of coming out of a tough lockdown in 2020. I wanted to somehow collapse ideas of the past, present and future into a single image that also suggests alternate history."
This year we had some WONDERFUL costumes!
Each classroom had a variety of characters parading around and enjoying their time discussing why this costume was their favourite. We loved seeing the creativity behind some amazing handmade costumes as well as the bright colours of some of our much loved characters.
Below are some photos from throughout our classrooms!
