The Benefits of Sensory Play in Early Childhood

Sensory play is more than just fun—it’s a powerful way for young children to explore, learn, and make sense of the world around them. By engaging their senses of touch, sight, sound, smell, and even taste (when safe), children strengthen vital developmental skills that support learning across all areas.

Why Sensory Play Matters
Through sensory-rich experiences, children:

Build cognitive skills by experimenting, problem-solving, and making predictions (Piaget, 1952).
Develop fine and gross motor skills through scooping, squeezing, pouring, and manipulating materials (Piek et al., 2008).
Strengthen language and communication skills as they describe textures, colours, and actions (Fisher et al., 2011).
Regulate their emotions and wellbeing, finding calm and focus in tactile experiences (Perry, 2001).
Foster creativity and imagination, turning everyday materials into magical possibilities (Duffy, 2006).

Examples of Sensory Play in Action

Potion Play


Children love mixing coloured water, sparkly glitter, flowers, and natural materials to create their own “potions.” This type of play encourages imaginative storytelling, introduces concepts of measurement and cause-and-effect, and allows children to express their creativity. Watching a potion fizz or change colour can spark curiosity about science in playful, hands-on ways (Gascoyne, 2012).

Finger Painting


Finger painting offers a full sensory experience as children explore texture, colour mixing, and mark-making with their hands. It develops fine motor coordination, supports early pre-writing skills, and encourages self-expression. Children also build confidence as they see their ideas come to life on paper in bold, colourful strokes (Kolbe, 2015).

Play-Dough


Squishing, rolling, and shaping play-dough strengthens children’s finger muscles, laying the foundation for later writing and self-help tasks like buttoning clothes. Beyond the physical benefits, play-dough provides endless opportunities for imaginative play—children can create animals, food, or characters while practising social skills like sharing tools and ideas (Department of Education, Skills and Employment [DESE], 2022).

Ice Play


Exploring melting ice is a wonderful way to introduce children to scientific concepts of change, states of matter, and temperature. Whether they’re touching smooth, slippery ice cubes, watching colours swirl as ice melts into water, or trying to free small objects frozen inside, children develop curiosity, patience, and problem-solving strategies (Skamp, 2020).

Final Thoughts

Sensory play is much more than an activity to “fill in time”—it is the foundation for meaningful learning in the early years. When children scoop, pour, squish, paint, or explore melting ice, they are engaging in the kinds of experiences that shape how they think, communicate, and connect with the world. These playful interactions help them develop not only academic skills, such as early literacy and science concepts, but also life skills, including resilience, self-regulation, and collaboration with others.

For educators, sensory play offers opportunities to observe children’s problem-solving skills, extend their thinking with intentional questions, and connect play to curriculum outcomes. For families, it can be as simple as offering a tray of water, play-dough at the kitchen table, or a handful of safe household ingredients for potion-making. The beauty of sensory play is that it does not require expensive resources—everyday materials hold endless possibilities for discovery.

Most importantly, sensory play nurtures joy. Children learn best when they are engaged, curious, and having fun, and sensory-rich experiences provide precisely that. By embedding sensory opportunities into daily routines, we support children in building a strong foundation for lifelong learning, while also giving them the chance to be children—exploring, experimenting, and delighting in the magic of the moment.
