The Importance of Loose Parts and Creativity in Early Childhood
When children play, they are not just filling in time or keeping themselves entertained—they are learning, experimenting, and discovering who they are. One of the richest ways to encourage this growth is through loose parts play, which involves providing children with open-ended materials that they can use in unlimited ways.
Loose parts can be anything from natural treasures, such as shells, pinecones, and sticks, to recycled items like cardboard tubes, fabric scraps, or bottle tops. Unlike many store-bought toys that serve a single purpose, loose parts spark imagination because children decide how to use them.

Why Loose Parts Matter
Loose parts play is important because it allows children to become the directors of their own play. A simple stick might be used as a fishing rod, a magic wand, or part of a building structure. With no set rules, children are free to test ideas, take risks, and adapt when things don’t work out.
This process builds problem-solving and resilience—children learn it’s okay to try, make mistakes, and then try again. It also helps them develop critical thinking as they compare, sort, measure, and build with the materials they have. When children play together, loose parts also promote collaboration and communication, as they share resources and work toward common goals.
Supporting Creativity at Home and in Early Learning
Families can easily support loose parts play by collecting a small basket of safe, everyday items. Cardboard boxes, ribbons, or even old kitchen utensils can all be transformed into something magical during play. Taking children for nature walks is another wonderful way to gather treasures like leaves, pebbles, and flowers, which they can then use in their play. These items often carry special meaning for children, connecting them to the natural world and their family experiences.
In early learning centres, educators intentionally create environments where loose parts are presented in inviting ways—arranged in baskets, trays, or outdoor spaces that encourage curiosity. By setting up these opportunities, educators are practising “intentional teaching” while still allowing children the freedom to explore and create in their own unique ways.
The Benefits Go Beyond Play
Loose parts are not just fun—they are powerful tools for learning and development. Engaging with open-ended materials supports language development as children describe, explain, and share their ideas. It encourages early mathematical thinking as they count, sort, compare sizes, and experiment with balance. It also nurtures creativity and imagination, which are essential not only in childhood but throughout life.
Importantly, loose parts play aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which recognises that creativity, exploration, and problem-solving are essential outcomes for children’s learning and development (DEEWR, 2009). By encouraging children to use their imagination freely, we are helping them develop a sense of agency, confidence, and a love of learning that will carry into school and beyond.

Loose parts play gives children more than just a way to stay busy—it offers them the chance to become thinkers, creators, and innovators. By providing children with everyday items and the freedom to explore, we are giving them lifelong skills such as adaptability, persistence, and the ability to view the world through curious eyes.
